Thread Painting

In a few weeks I am teaching a class on thread painting to the art quilter's group in my quilt guild. So, this weekend I did a bit of experimenting with various floral patterns. This is the one I consider successful. The other 2 started with a pattern sketched from a photograph and they looked a bit rough when I finished them. They need a bit more work to be polished.

Most of the thread painting that I do is done with my longarm machine on applique. The photo above is a 4x6" piece of floral fabric fused onto a piece of Peltex and thread painted on my domestic sewing machine. This will become a post card.

My next test will be using Decor Bond as a stabilizer. That is what I use to stabilize my projects when thread painting with my longarm machine. I'm hoping it will also work well with the domestic machine.

Your thread painting is beautiful on this. I do mine on my domestic machine....I use solvy and tulle, 2 layers of each, as a base stretched in a tension hoop. When completed I cut out the motif and applique to wall hanging, etc. I don't like stitching thru fusible at all for thread painting.

Zipper Leader Tutorial - Part 1

I removed my old zippers yesterday and completed attaching my new zippers. Along the way I made 2 additional sets of zipper leaders so I have the ability to have 3 quilts ready to zip on if I need to. As promised, I took photos of the steps and will post them in stages. These directions are my own and you may be able to find other instructions out the internet. This is something I came up with on trial and error. The first set of zipper leaders I made were with garment zipper that you buy by the yard at a fabric store. They didn't work out the way I wanted. They kept separating on their own. So now I have 8 yards of zipper to use in other projects. First off you'll need some materials and supplies. 1. Canvas Duck - I purchased 4 yards of 60" wide canvas so I wouldn't have to seam the leaders. This is enough to make 5 sets of 2 leaders. Buy the length to match the length of your zippers. 2. Glue Basting

If you want to try glue basting your bindings, check out Sharon Schamber's website for a video on the technique. This is whom I learned it from. Click on the "Free Area" link on the left, then "Free Area" on the next page. Scroll down to the December 2007 video "Binding the Angel". Sharon gives details of her glue basted binding technique. I do my glue basting a bit different, but the results are the same. I glue baste the binding all the way around the quilt before stitching it down. When I get to the end of the binding, I glue baste the miter, stitch that miter, then glue baste that area down. Then I go ahead and stitch the entire binding down. The 2 best tips I feel are to use "school glue" like Elmers or Rose Art. I've used both and they both work well. Don't use "All Purpose Glue". The 2nd tip is to heat set your glue with a hot iron.
