Vintage Dresden Plate Quilt



This 1930's Dresden Plate quilt is a re-work. I purchased the quilt at an antique shop a year or so ago. It was tied in the center of the plates with crochet cotton, and machine stitched in the ditch around the blocks. The binding was frayed and the backing was full of holes. So I took it apart, gave it a new backing and quilted it using an 80/20 batting.


The plates are quite faded, and it was obviously used. As I worked with this quilt I realized that the sashing was not 100% cotton fabric - it is a poly-cotton blend. It is possible that this isn't the first time this quilt has been reworked. Perhaps the blocks were sewn into a different setting and someone took it apart and added the sashing. Or perhaps the blocks were stored away for years and taken out and set in with the poly-cotton sashing back in the 60's or 70's or 80's. It would be interesting to know the true story of this quilt.

The quilting I did leans towards traditional quilting with feathers in the background and a 1/4 inch outline stitch in the blades. However the sashing is a current-day freehand design.

The quilt measured 55 x 72 before quilting. The binding is a 1930's reproduction fabric.

Zipper Leader Tutorial - Part 1

I removed my old zippers yesterday and completed attaching my new zippers. Along the way I made 2 additional sets of zipper leaders so I have the ability to have 3 quilts ready to zip on if I need to. As promised, I took photos of the steps and will post them in stages. These directions are my own and you may be able to find other instructions out the internet. This is something I came up with on trial and error. The first set of zipper leaders I made were with garment zipper that you buy by the yard at a fabric store. They didn't work out the way I wanted. They kept separating on their own. So now I have 8 yards of zipper to use in other projects. First off you'll need some materials and supplies. 1. Canvas Duck - I purchased 4 yards of 60" wide canvas so I wouldn't have to seam the leaders. This is enough to make 5 sets of 2 leaders. Buy the length to match the length of your zippers. 2. Glue Basting

If you want to try glue basting your bindings, check out Sharon Schamber's website for a video on the technique. This is whom I learned it from. Click on the "Free Area" link on the left, then "Free Area" on the next page. Scroll down to the December 2007 video "Binding the Angel". Sharon gives details of her glue basted binding technique. I do my glue basting a bit different, but the results are the same. I glue baste the binding all the way around the quilt before stitching it down. When I get to the end of the binding, I glue baste the miter, stitch that miter, then glue baste that area down. Then I go ahead and stitch the entire binding down. The 2 best tips I feel are to use "school glue" like Elmers or Rose Art. I've used both and they both work well. Don't use "All Purpose Glue". The 2nd tip is to heat set your glue with a hot iron.
