Arabasque

This is my wholecloth quilt that I've titled "Arabasque". The designs were taken from a Dover copyright free book of Victorian Designs. I chose 3 designs and they were all labeled "arabasque" - hence the name of my quilt. The photo above is the center top of the quilt. I just starting to quilt around the cutaway trapunto. The stitching you see is the water soluble thread. I used Vanish Extra.
The photo above is the inner corner design after quilting part of it.


This is the outer corner design after quilting. I am using So Fine thread in the top and bobbin in color number 401 - white. I'll include some micro stippling (very little), McTavishing, and piano key quilting. I still need to chose one more background filler, but that will come to me as I work on the quilt.
I'm really enjoying quilting on this quilt. It isn't very large so it shouldn't take more than a week to complete even with the heirloom background filler.

I can't wait to see how this quilt turns out, the designs are beautiful. I am curious about one thing- I've never actually seen a long arm quilt machine much less seen one in action! Are you in control of the machine? Is it difficult to use (in the pictures I've seen it is HUGE)? All I know is I want to play with one!!

Zipper Leader Tutorial - Part 1

I removed my old zippers yesterday and completed attaching my new zippers. Along the way I made 2 additional sets of zipper leaders so I have the ability to have 3 quilts ready to zip on if I need to. As promised, I took photos of the steps and will post them in stages. These directions are my own and you may be able to find other instructions out the internet. This is something I came up with on trial and error. The first set of zipper leaders I made were with garment zipper that you buy by the yard at a fabric store. They didn't work out the way I wanted. They kept separating on their own. So now I have 8 yards of zipper to use in other projects. First off you'll need some materials and supplies. 1. Canvas Duck - I purchased 4 yards of 60" wide canvas so I wouldn't have to seam the leaders. This is enough to make 5 sets of 2 leaders. Buy the length to match the length of your zippers. 2. Glue Basting

If you want to try glue basting your bindings, check out Sharon Schamber's website for a video on the technique. This is whom I learned it from. Click on the "Free Area" link on the left, then "Free Area" on the next page. Scroll down to the December 2007 video "Binding the Angel". Sharon gives details of her glue basted binding technique. I do my glue basting a bit different, but the results are the same. I glue baste the binding all the way around the quilt before stitching it down. When I get to the end of the binding, I glue baste the miter, stitch that miter, then glue baste that area down. Then I go ahead and stitch the entire binding down. The 2 best tips I feel are to use "school glue" like Elmers or Rose Art. I've used both and they both work well. Don't use "All Purpose Glue". The 2nd tip is to heat set your glue with a hot iron. It dries the glue quickly. The glue washes out easily so you won't have any residu
